Domain Name or Address or URL of a website is nothing but a “textual name” assigned to an IP adresss on some server somewhere which will be located once a user types in the “textual name” of a website in the web browser on any computer with enabled internet connection. The same is done with the help of DNS (Domain Name Servers) which are to be updated regularly by the ISPs (Internet Service Providers) in order to make the website functional on the address. (That was the gyaan!)
When Choosing or Selecting a Domain, following points should be helpful.
- Easy to Remember: Most of the time a website becomes popular not because of the “domain name” but because of the content and it’s search engine ranking. In such a case if you provide an “easy name” to visitor(s) which you may get randomly from the search engine in that case you will get more and more returning visitors as they “Remember” your domain name. Make sure that your domain name is not a “Miss Spelling ;)” of a word or domain as this will make you lose your visitors later to another site or a browser “not found” error.
- Makes Sense: A domain name should make sense to the visitors and the content available on the site should also co-relate to the domain name itself. Have you ever realized that how many times you did skip search engine results just because you didn’t like that domain name and thought that it wont have the information you are searching for. For Eg, if you are searching for “Skin Infection” and you see search results from a some website (fictional) Beautiful Gardens.com then the results are not appealing to your search and you will most likely skip the same and so will your “Potential Visitors”. So make sure that your domain name makes sense to the content which you will be creating on the site / blog.
- Search Engine Optimization: Search engines work best if they get a lot of meaningful text on a site. Having your prime keywords in your domain name will help you rank better on search engines. The keywords should be related to the content which you plan to create on the site.
- MakeWords.com is a useful resource for creating domain names with themed words such as technical, educational, verbs and much more. You will have to provide a keyword which will then be tagged with other themed words as per the criteria you choose and select.
The above should help to come up with better domain name. More information will be updated to this post.
